چکیده

Real world surfaces such as tree bark, moss, sponge, and fur often have complicated geometry that leads to effects such as self-shadowing, masking, specularity, and interreflection as the lighting or viewpoint in a scene changes. We use image based techniques to analyze and represent bidirectional texture functions, or BTFs, with correct geometric and lighting effects. A basis for the apparent BRDF of points on the surface is determined and used to compress the texture datasets, as well as provide a space for comparison of texture elements across all lights and views. The compression method reduces the approximately 10,000 images in each 6-D lighting, viewpoint, and spatial variation texture dataset to under 2 MB.

Acquiring Bidirectional Texture Functions for Large-Scale Material Samples

Most current acquisition setups for bidirectional texture functions (BTFs) are incapable of capturing large-scale material samples. We propose a method based on controlled texture synthesis to produce BTFs of appealing visual quality for such materials. Our approach uses as input data a complete measurement of a small fraction of the sample, together with few images of the large-scale structure...

Bidirectional Texture Function Compression Based on Multi-Level Vector Quantization

The Bidirectional Texture Function (BTF) is becoming widely used for accurate representation of real-world material appearance. In this paper a novel BTF compression model is proposed. The model resamples input BTF data into a parametrization, allowing decomposition of individual view and illumination dependent texels into a set of multidimensional conditional probability density functions. The...

Procedural Editing of Bidirectional Texture Functions

Measured material representations like Bidirectional Texture Functions or Reflectance Fields offer very realistic appearance but the user is currently not capable of changing this appearance in an effective and intuitive way. Such editing operations would require a low-dimensional but expressive model for appearance that exposes only a small set of intuitively editable parameters (1D-sliders, 2...

BTF Modelling Using BRDF Texels

The highest fidelity representations of realistic real-world materials currently used comprise Bidirectional Texture Functions (BTF). The BTF is a six dimensional function depending on view and illumination directions as well as on planar texture coordinates. The huge size of such measurements, typically in the form of thousands of images covering all possible combinations of illumination and v...

Compressing Bidirectional Texture Functions via Tensor Train Decomposition

Material reflectance properties play a central role in photorealistic rendering. Bidirectional texture functions (BTFs) can faithfully represent these complex properties, but their inherent high dimensionality (texture coordinates, color channels, view and illumination spatial directions) requires many coefficients to encode. Numerous algorithms based on tensor decomposition have been proposed ...
